Joe Massie created a floral sculpture of David Attenborough to launch Sky 3D’s new series Kingdom of Plants 3D.  Joe is the current Chelsea Florist of the year, a title he has held since 2009.

50 species of plants and over 1000 flowers were used to create the lifelike design.  It features phalaenopsis orchids, delphiniums, muscari, vanda orchids, hydrangea, roses, nigella, passion flowers and stachys leaves amongst others.  The focal plant in the hands of the sculpture is a phalaenopsis orchid.  It took Joe and his team of 6 florists 2 days to complete.

The close up image shows how detailed the design was and the beautiful selection of materials Joe used.  Joe said “ It was a great challenge to take on. The finished sculpture embodies everything that the series has to offer: Sir David with the world of Kew’s exciting plants all set in a 3D form. To have the man himself come face to face with the sculpture really completes the scene and I hope he is as thrilled as we are with the finished work.”

Kingdom of Plants 3D was filmed at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew using ground-breaking technology and 3D time laspe techniques. The three part series starts tonight on Sky 3D and in 2D on Sky Atlantic at 6pm.

David Attenborough said  “This is certainly a first! I never imagined that I would come face to face with my floral double – Joe worked extremely hard on the artwork”

Jennifer-Murphy-Chelsea-2012

photo: Flowers by Moira

First time Chelsea competitor Jennifer Murphy walked away with a Gold Medal and the coveted title of RHS Chelsea Florist of the year.  Jennifer travelled from Dunshaughlin in Ireland with all the parts of her design to compete at Chelsea.  The brief was to create a chandelier to be hung at the Queen’s Jubilee dinner.  The fabulous design contained 60 mini crown charms each embellished with a tiny button chrysanth to signify the Queen’s 60 year reign.

Jennifer used roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, calla lilies, phalaenopsis orchids, eryngium, and hypericum, all in reds and purples to represent the royal colours.  She made metres and metres of braided and crocheted silver wire and 500 diamante pins to decorate her chandelier. The design featured large rings of test tubes which mirrored the uniformed rows of crystals on chandeliers.  The design was a staggering 1.85 metres in length when complete.  Jennifer said she spent many hours preparing all the wire work for the design at home and then worked all night to finish it in time for judging.  The hard work and preparation was definitely worth it, Jennifer’s design was a worthy winner.

hydrangea-plants

Common name:  Hydrangea

Botanical Names: Hydrangea

Origin: Japan

Colours: White, pink, purple, blue

Hydrangeas are thirsty plants and get their name from the Greek word “Hydor” meaning water, they were introduced to the UK in 1788 from Japan.  There are many varieties and colours from pure white through to blush pink, and amethyst, as well as many beautiful two tone varieties.  There are three main types of hydrangea, pronounced hiy-DRANE-gee-a, the Mophead has large round flowers made up of dozens of tiny florets.  This is the most recognizable type and popular as a cut flower.  Panicle is a long cone shaped cluster of florets and Lacecap is a flatter shape with lots of tiny buds surrounded by a circle of normal sized flowers.

Hydrangeas have become very popular cut flowers in recent years; they are often featured in home and lifestyle magazines for modern rooms or country kitchens.  They drink a lot of water, so hydrangeas should always be in deep water.  If the flower head goes soft or starts to wilt the stem should be recut and plunged into boiling water for 30 seconds before replacing into the vase.  For a contemporary look use a vase of hydrangeas in a vivid colour.  The beautiful pastel shades or two tone varieties give a more vintage or rustic appearance.  I would mix hydrangeas with roses or peonies for a vintage look.

The Brewin Dolphin Garden designed by Cleve West has been awarded Gold medal and Best in Show.  The garden features beech hedging with yew topiary shapes contrasted against herbaceous plants arranged in a loose layered style.

The award for Best Fresh Garden went to The Easigrass Garden “Green with…” created by Tony Smith. The garden explores envy and desire through plant history, colour and form.  The main feature of the garden is a cage structure made from Perspex rods and poles.  The cage represents a prison which houses orchids, tulips and ferns which have all been desired and envied throughout periods of history.

Best Artisan Garden was won by Satoyama Life for The Ishihara Kazuyuki Design Laboratory Garden. The garden was designed by Kazuyuki Ishihara, and is inspired by the Satoyama which is the Japanese phrase for the area between the lowlands and mountains.  The garden emphasises the importance of existing in harmony with nature.  The main plants are acers and the garden features a thinning techniques used in Ikebana to highlight natural beauty.
